Ukraine's Automated Turrets Using AI Have Shot Down russian Geran-5 Jet-Powered Drones

Ukraine has deployed artificial intelligence-powered automated machine-gun turrets that successfully intercepted and shot down high-speed Russian jet-powered attack drones, including the Geran-5. Ukrainian officials confirmed the breakthrough combat kills, marking the first time robotic gun turrets have neutralized the fast-moving aerial threats. President Volodymyr Zelensky previously announced that twelve such units were installed in areas where Russian jet drones are particularly active, including around Kyiv. The deployment addresses a critical vulnerability, as the jet-powered weapons previously outpaced conventional Ukrainian air defenses.

  1. AI-Powered Turrets Shoot Down Russian Jet Drones

    Why it matters

Russia's introduction of high-speed jet-powered drones created severe challenges for traditional Ukrainian air defenses and flying interceptors that struggled to match their velocity. Ground-based automated turrets utilizing machine vision and artificial intelligence provide a stationary kinetic layer to counter these unjammable threats. Ukraine is also testing new interceptor options such as the Nika missile and the SPYS interceptor.

    What is confirmed

    • Ukraine's automated machine-gun turrets using artificial intelligence have shot down Russian jet-powered Geran-5 drones.
    • President Volodymyr Zelensky previously announced that twelve such turrets had been installed where Russian jet-powered drones are particularly active, including around Kyiv.
    • Ukraine is also testing the new Nika missile and SPYS interceptor against jet-powered drones.

    What to watch next

    • Expansion of automated turret deployments to additional vulnerable regions beyond Kyiv
    • Performance data and combat results from newly tested interceptors like the Nika missile and SPYS
