Ukraine's Automated Turrets Using AI Have Shot Down russian Geran-5 Jet-Powered Drones - en.defence-ua.com
Ukraine has begun deploying artificial intelligence-enabled automated machine-gun turrets to counter high-speed Russian jet-powered attack drones. Ukrainian officials confirmed that these robotic systems have successfully achieved their first combat interceptions, destroying fast-moving threats including Geran-5 missile-drones. The deployment comes as traditional air defense methods struggle against the newer, faster Russian hardware. Twelve of the AI-guided systems have already been installed in areas facing heavy attacks, including around Kyiv, with additional units planned for the surrounding region.

Ukraine AI Turrets Intercept Jet Drones
Ukraine has begun deploying artificial intelligence-enabled automated machine-gun turrets to counter high-speed Russian jet-powered attack drones. Ukrainian officials confirmed that these robotic systems have successfully achieved their first combat interceptions, destroying fast-moving threats including Geran-5 missile-drones. The deployment comes as traditional air defense methods struggle against the newer, faster Russian hardware. Twelve of the AI-guided systems have already been installed in areas facing heavy attacks, including around Kyiv, with additional units planned for the surrounding region.
Why it matters
Russia has increasingly relied on high-speed jet-powered strike drones, challenging existing Ukrainian air defenses that previously lacked effective answers for the rapid targets. In response, Ukrainian developers created machine-vision and artificial intelligence systems integrated into automated gun turrets. These kinetic interception units aim to protect critical areas from unjammable or fast-moving aerial threats.
What is confirmed
- Ukraine has deployed artificial intelligence-powered automated turrets to shoot down Russian jet-powered attack drones.
- Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat confirmed that robotic turrets have shot down jet-powered UAVs, including Geran-5 drones.
- President Volodymyr Zelensky previously announced that twelve such turrets had been installed in areas where Russian jet-powered drones are active, including around Kyiv.
- Ukrainian presidential adviser Serhii Flash Beskrestnov stated that another eight systems are planned for deployment in the Kyiv region.
Still unconfirmed
- The Geran-5 drone is described by a single source as fiber-optic-guided and traveling at 600 km/h.
