US Approves El Salvador Troop Surge Into Haiti

El Salvador has deployed over 2,000 soldiers to Haiti following a gang ambush that left four Salvadoran personnel missing. The United States has greenlit the troop surge, which marks a significant escalation in the security response to Haiti's ongoing crisis. Amid the military deployment, Haiti has announced new election dates and a Haitian gang leader has called for peace. The intervention serves as the first major overseas test of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele's domestic anti-gang tactics.

   Why it matters

President Donald Trump reportedly authorized Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele to expand military operations, telling him to do what is necessary. The deployment targets groups such as the 400 Mawozo and Chèn Méchan gangs following the October kidnapping of four Salvadoran technicians. Critics warn that the military escalation could potentially exacerbate the existing violence within the country.
