   World's Loudest Birds Rival Jackhammers

Researchers have identified two bird species, the bare-throated bellbird and the red-legged seriema, as new contenders for the world's loudest bird, with calls rivaling jackhammers and chainsaws. These birds, found in Brazil, can reach volumes comparable to loud industrial noises. The study measured the calls of 123 bird species, revealing clues about how some birds produce such powerful calls.

   Why it matters

The study of loud bird species can provide insights into the evolution of extreme vocalizations and how body size and beak shape predict call volume. The loudest birds are of interest to scientists due to their unique characteristics and potential advantages in their environments. This research has implications for understanding animal communication and behavior.

   What is confirmed

   • The bare-throated bellbird and the red-legged seriema are among the world's loudest birds.
   • These birds' calls can rival the volume of jackhammers and chainsaws.
   • The study measured the calls of 123 bird species in Brazil.
   • Body size and beak shape can predict call volume in birds.

   What to watch next

   • Further research on the evolution of extreme loudness in birds
   • More detailed analysis of the bare-throated bellbird and red-legged seriema's calls
   • Comparative studies of loud bird species in different environments
