Miami, Sep 23 (EFE) .- The Governor of Florida (USA), Ron DeSantis, declared an emergency this Friday in 24 of the 67 counties that the state has in the face of the threat of a major hurricane that could reach this territory next week.

The Republican governor also requested a federal Emergency Declaration prior to the arrival on land of this atmospheric phenomenon as a forecast of the impacts it may cause.

Among the counties in a state of emergency are several in the south of the peninsula such as Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe and Palm Beach.

“This declaration will make available significant resources and support, as well as free up funding sources for emergency protective measures,” the governor said in a statement.

“Under this emergency order, members of the Florida National Guard will be activated and awaiting orders,” he added.

The governor alerted citizens to take precautions due to depression number 9 that is strengthening in its direction towards the center of the Caribbean from where it can make the jump to Florida as a major hurricane after passing through Jamaica and Cuba over the weekend.

“This storm has the potential to become a major hurricane and we encourage all Floridians to make their preparations. We are coordinating with all state and local government partners to track the potential impacts of this storm,” he said.

At a press conference this Friday, for her part, the mayor of Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava, also warned that “it is time to make preparations.”

“There is no reason to panic, but we want everyone to be prepared,” Levine Cava said.

Also, the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) said Friday that they were monitoring the system and also urged residents to prepare.

“It is essential that Floridians remain vigilant and prepared: it only takes one storm to cause costly or irreversible damage to your home or business,” said Kevin Guthrie, director of this entity, in a separate statement.

According to local media such as NBC6, officials from the American Red Cross in the southern region of Florida announced that they are also preparing before the impacts of the potential hurricane.

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) reported that it is taking precautions against possible heavy rains, which may begin in the southern part of the region this Monday, it said in a statement.

Among other actions in preparation for the storm, SFWMD mentioned lowering the channels to pre-storm levels to allow the flood control system to operate at full capacity if needed.

If necessary, the South Florida Water Management District will close the navigation locks to ensure the safety of boaters and prevent damage to the locks.

Meanwhile, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports in its latest report that Nine is located 515 miles (830 km) east of the Jamaican capital, Kingston, and 1,015 miles (1,635 km) from Havana and advancing with maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour (55 km/h).

Its translational speed is 14 miles per hour (22 km/h).

Although it is still early to know the exact magnitude of the cyclone, some forecasts indicate that it could pass through Cuba as a category 1 or 2 hurricane and even reach the coast of Florida (USA) as a category 3 hurricane. EFE
