They can grow up to the size of a rabbit. Measuring approximately 20cm long and 18cm in diameter, huge snails have been sighted and located in Florida, USA. Recognizable thanks to their size, these gastropods are also equipped with a conical shell, pointed, brown with welts.
After several reports, Florida has launched an eradication campaign, since in addition to being colossal, not really appetizing and very greedy – they have more than 500 different species on their menu and also appreciate the painting of houses!, these snails are “one of the hundred most invasive species on the planet” according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and above all dangerous. Just that!
They carry a parasite called rat lungworm, which can cause meningitis. Contact with giant snails can lead to headaches, nausea, neurological damage or…death.
Their presence is directly linked to the climate since these gastropods like heat and humidity. Their first appearances were spotted in Africa where they were cooked, although this practice is not recommended today.
And their presence will be difficult to eradicate! The beast being very prolific – hundreds of eggs laid per month – the American authorities estimate that three years will be necessary for their extermination.
According to our colleagues from Franceinfo, “en 2011, still in Florida, Miami was confronted with the same phenomenon. More than 35,000 molluscs identified: it ended last year alone. It took ten years to get over it!”. Gloups !
