Hawaii’s Kilauea Volcano Erupts Again; raise alert level

Reuters.- Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted Thursday, according to a volcanic activity advisory from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), after detecting a glow at the summit that produced smog in Kilauea National Park. Hawaii volcanoes.

The volcanic alert level was raised to “red” after an assessment of the eruption and associated hazards, the advisory said.

The USGS said the volcanic gas, which consists of sulfur dioxide and other gases, could produce a visible haze of volcanic smog that has been observed downwind of Kilauea.

Volcanic smog has the potential to create airborne health risks for residents and visitors, causing respiratory difficulties and also damaging agricultural crops.

Known for being the younger and more active neighbor to Mauna Loa, which erupted in November for the first time since 1984, Kilauea volcano has been erupting since 2021.

However, the Mauna Loa eruption has not had any impact and remains calm, the USGS said.
