A man listed as a suspect in the stabbing death of a woman at an apartment building in Brockton, Massachusetts, has died, according to authorities.
Joao Correia, 56, was in critical condition at a local hospital on Wednesday night, after allegedly stabbing Veronica Gonvales Rosa, 48, to death. Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz called it a “savage and brutal” attack.
Cruz’s office confirmed Thursday that Correia had died.
Authorities believe the victim and suspect knew each other and had a long-standing relationship, but did not specify what type of relationship it was.
Gonvales Rosa was found in the driveway of her apartment building on Crescent Street with obvious injuries to her head and face, prosecutors said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman’s nephew said his aunt was attacked on her way home Wednesday afternoon, with her 2-year-old granddaughter still in the back seat of her car. Investigators have not confirmed those details.
She added that she was a hard worker and that she had two children and a grandson.
