In Duval County, Florida, thousands of books purchased over a year ago have still not been distributed to more than 200 elementary schools. Since January 2022, a committee has been reviewing these headlines to see if they contravene new laws that ban certain speech about gender and race. “Some of these books had a child with same-sex parents. Or a boy who chooses to wear dresses, or feels like the opposite gender. They saw these books on the list and the whole collection was suspended” explains Stephana Ferrell, who co-founded Florida Freedom to Read Project, an association aimed at defending “freedom to read”.
