It almost came to a brawl, but fifteen rounds of voting later, Republican Kevin McCarthy was finally elected as Speaker of the House. “That was easy”, he joked afterwards. But to win over Trumpist dissidents, he had to make concessions that could paralyze his presidency. “This spectacle is too cynical even for an episode of House of Cards.”
