Residents of a growing area in Montgomery County say they have a huge problem: they can’t get cell service in their area.

Not only is this problem annoying, but it can also be dangerous if someone has to call 911. This problem occurs with customers who use various cellular carriers and they say that nothing is being done to fix it. They turned to KPRC 2 Investigates for help.

It’s nine o’clock in the morning and Shelley Raines, Montgomery’s real estate agent, has a very important business call to make. Shelly is going to have a very bad day.

“Call failed!” Raines said. I can’t even call! »

Welcome to the Woodforest community as owners struggle with cell phone outages, dropped calls and terrible coverage. The problem has been around for years for customers who use AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Housing development is thriving in a growing area of ​​over 10,000 people and nearly 4,000 homes. The more people move in, the worse the cell coverage problem becomes.


“Well, that’s just awful,” said Chanel Resis. “Many parents panic because they can’t reach their kids, because text messages don’t get through, phone calls don’t get through. »

“My biggest fear is that when you call 911, someone will die because you won’t be able to get through,” said Mark Meyer.

“Get your head out of your ass and bring us some magic tricks over here. I mean, it’s not that hard,” Raines said.

We asked the group how many of them can’t even make a cell phone call right at the front door. Each person raised their hand.

We asked how many people cannot make phone calls in their own homes. Each person raised their hand.

We asked how many people can’t call within a mile of your house? Each person raised their hand.

One of them even tried to get through to investigator Bill Spencer. The call failed.

The developers of Woodforest stated that the problem is that there are cell towers to the north and south of this village. But it is clear that at least one more tower is needed.

Chanel Raesis is especially worried that her two children will need help one day, but she can’t reach her. Even cell signal maps show that she and her family don’t have coverage where they live.

So what are mobile operators doing to solve this problem?

These neighbors say they have contacted their mobile carriers several times in an attempt to get answers to this problem. KPRC2 Investigates was asked to be interviewed to explain what they are doing to help Woodforest residents get the cell service they deserve.

AT&T and Verizon sent us statements that basically said they were still looking for ways to improve their networks. (See full statements at the bottom of this article.) Despite our requests, T-Mobile kept saying they would answer our questions, but didn’t send us a statement.

What if you live in an area with poor phone coverage?

Solution #1: Switch your mobile phone to calls over Wi-Fi. Go to settings, click on connections and select Wi-Fi calling. Now turn it on and if you have Wi-Fi in your house it should work.

Solution #2: It is much more difficult and more expensive. You can purchase a cell phone booster system that will require you to mount a rooftop antenna to pick up a weak cell signal and broadcast it throughout your home.

Solution #3: Switch to another cell company that may have a stronger signal.

Forest Forest Statement:

“Because of the existing towers north and south of Woodforest, we have a major communications gap, an issue we have been working on for years. To solve this problem, last year we hired an experienced consultant who signed a contract with a cell tower designer; the contract has been completed and we have reserved three potential sites that will have the least impact on residents and businesses, while still having the maximum capacity. The land will be leased at very modest rates on a long-term basis.


Now mobile operators must agree on the real positions of the sites. Construction cannot begin until this is done. Mobile operators have not yet connected with us.

In addition, the Forest Owners Association contacted residents to encourage them to contact mobile operators directly to express their dissatisfaction with the poor level of service. We are pleased that this issue is gaining attention and we hope it will lead to better service to our owners and businesses.

Verizon’s full statement:

“Verizon is constantly investing in our network to provide our customers with the quality service and reliability they expect and deserve. As more people do more things, in more places with more devices connected to the Internet, we are seeing a dramatic increase in voice and data traffic on our network. We only expect this trend to intensify.

Over the weekend, our network engineers upgraded the cell site in the area to improve network performance. They also informed me that we continue to evaluate performance in this region.

Full AT&T statement:

“We understand the importance of keeping our customers connected and continue to look for ways to improve our network and deliver better services through additional investment. Last month, some Montgomery customers may have experienced intermittent service while we completed maintenance on our existing wireless installations. We remain committed to working with municipal governments to find solutions that balance the needs of our business and the concerns of society.

From 2018 to 2020, we expanded coverage and improved connectivity in more communities by investing more than $7.7 billion in our wireless and wired networks in Texas.


We received a response to our question about cellular service in the area from a T-Mobile representative asking for more accurate location information. We sent additional information on April 18 and contacted the base three times after that to try to get a response. Each time the spokesman said they were working on getting the application, but so far they haven’t sent us anything.
