Louise Fletcher, career

Born on 22 July 1934 in Birmingham, Louise Fletcher began her acting career in the late 1950s in this episodic TV series such as Lawman, Bat Masterson, Maverick, The Untouchables and 77 Sunset Strip. Similar roles followed at a steady pace throughout the 1960s, with appearances in Sugarfoot, Perry Mason and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. She appeared in a 1963 film A Gathering of Eagles and, more casually, in 1974’s Thieves Like Us, directed by Robert Altman.

It was his performance in the latter film that drew the interest of director Miloš Forman, who was in the process of casting for his film adaptation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel set in a psychiatric institution and focused on the conflict between a man who pretends to be mad to avoid prison and the bossy head nurse who asks for conformity and obedience at all costs.
