Lufthansa flight LH357 from Los Angeles to Frankfurt had to be diverted to Chicago after a passenger’s laptop burned down.

Small fire in a Lufthansa flight

Flight LH357, operated by a Boeing 747-8i registered D-ABYJ, took off from Los Angeles on December 26, 2022 and was forced to land at Chicago-O’Hare less than an hour later after the computer laptop overheated and caused a “small fire” in the aircraft cabin. The landing in Chicago was uneventful, but two flight attendants required treatment for smoke inhalation. No passengers were injured, according to a statement from Lufthansa.

The passengers on the Lufthansa flight were transferred to other flights, probably those of United Airlines, Lufthansa’s Star Alliance partner and which also offers a direct flight to Frankfurt. Meanwhile, the Lufthansa 747-8i returned to base about four hours later, operating flight LH-9925.

Similar incident in Russia

On Thursday, December 29, a similar incident occurred in Moscow-Domodedov after a passenger’s portable battery ignited, forcing the Ural Airlines Airbus A32A to abort its departure to Kaliningrad.
