Mars takes 3 hits, guides Arizona to triumph over Dogs | Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) — Ketel Marte had three hits and drove in a run, Zach Davies had an effective drive into the sixth inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Friday night.

Marte struggled early in the season after signing a long-term deal during spring training, but in recent weeks he has begun to return to stellar form. He had a pair of doubles off Drew Smyly (1-4), who took the loss, and finished with three hits in fourth to raise his average to .222.

Davies (2-1) allowed three runs and four hits and capped his 5 2/3 inning outing with six strikeouts to claim the win. Ian Kennedy overcame a bases-loaded situation in the eighth following an error by shortstop Geraldo Perdromo with two outs.

Mark Melancon pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save in eight chances.

For the Cubs, the Venezuelans Rafael Ortega 3-0, with one produced; Willson Contreras 3-0; Ildemaro Vargas 3-1, with one run scored and two RBIs. Dominican Jonathan Villar 4-1, with a run scored.

For the Diamondbacks, the Dominicans Ketel Marte 4-3, with a run scored and an RBI; Geraldo Perdomo 4-3.
