the Department of French and Italian of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for its Masters and Doctoral programs in French Studies for the academic year beginning August 2022. Interdisciplinary specializations and programs

Offering specializations in a) French and francophone literature and culture, b) linguistic, and c) teaching French as a foreign language, our department introduces its doctoral students to interdisciplinary research and trains them for academic careers in the United States and elsewhere. In the department, the fields of visual and media studies, critical theory, movie theater, gender studies, immigration, French and Mediterranean literatures, Proustian studies and the study of minority languages ​​are particularly well represented ( Many of our students enrich their training with additional certification in another discipline. Diversity and research projects

Our department’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected in the innovative research projects carried out by our professors and doctoral students. Some theses in progress or recently defended at the department: “Language Practices of a Digital Black Feminist Community on French Twitter: Gender, Race, and Identity,” “Madness in 20th- and 21st-Century Francophone Women Writers,” “100 Years of Male Insecurity through the Figure of the Cheated Husband, 1856-1956 ”and“ Collectivism, Individuality, and Invisibility in 21st-Century Black French Women’s Writing. ” Some recent or forthcoming publications from our teachers: Orphan Black: Performance, Gender, Biopolitics (2018), Pseudonymous realities (2019), Victims of the Book: Reading and Masculinity in Fin-de-Siècle France (2019) and The Author as Cannibal: Rewriting in Francophone Literature as a Post-Colonial Genre (1969-1995) (2022). Financial aid

All students admitted to our programs receive exemption from registration fees and financial aid for 4-6 years in the form of scholarships and teaching or research assistant contracts. Students with a teaching contract generally give three courses per year, in order to deepen their pedagogical training and to earn a salary allowing them to live comfortably in Urbana-Champaign. The department also offers summer scholarships, study stays in Europe and Quebec, financial support for presenting papers at conferences, and periods without teaching load allowing students to devote themselves to their research.
