Mexico summons Rodolfo Pizarro to face Honduras in the 2021 Gold Cup quarterfinals

Arizona, United States.

Concacaf authorized Mexico to call in a footballer to replace Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano to the 2021 Gold Cup quarter-final match against Honduras and Argentine coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino decided to call up forward Rodolfo Pizarro from Inter Miami of Major League Soccer (MLS).

‘Chucky’ Lozano suffered a terrible blow in the Tricolor’s debut in Group A of the tournament against Trinidad and Tobago. The Napoli attacker hit his face with the knee of Trinidadian goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, after that, he was knocked out and with a bloody face.

The player was resuscitated and later taken to an emergency hospital. Doctors determined that his recovery time is four to six weeks, so he was out of the competition in the first few changes.

The Mexican national team had requested the change of player and it was not until after the group stage that Concacaf gave the green light for the call of a replacement for ‘Chucky’ Lozano.

In the absence of a forward, ‘Tata’ Martino considered Rodolfo Pizarro as the right player to fill the vacant spot.

The Mexican soccer player from Inter Miami is currently playing the MLS season in the United States, he was simply waiting for the call to report to the Aztec squad.

This replacement was possible thanks to the fact that the competition organizers reported that teams qualified for the 2021 Gold Cup quarterfinals would have the opportunity to make changes to their original roster of 23 players for medical reasons.

Mexico and Honduras will meet this Saturday at 8:00 p.m., Honduran time, in the State Farm Stadium de Glendale, Arizona, where the second semifinalist of the tournament in the area will be defined.
