Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)

from Superintendent Dr. Monifa B. McKnight

Dear MCPS Community,

I hope this new year will be bright and sunny for you and your families, and that you have had the opportunity to relax and reflect throughout the winter holidays. My personal resolution for 2023 is to continually reaffirm the importance of the work we do together in service to our students and, no doubt, in service to our community.

In a message sent before the winter holidays, we asked you to remain vigilant and aware of the potential impact of respiratory diseases (Influenza, RSV and COVID-19) circulating in our community. These illnesses can pose a challenge to our local healthcare system in our area after the holiday season. We need everyone’s help to reduce the impact of this challenge on school operations during these first weeks following the winter holidays. Remember that protective measures still apply – staying up to date on vaccinations, adopting healthy habits to prevent the spread of illness, and staying home if you are sick.

While we are excited to be back in school and back to training on Tuesday, January 3, we can only do so if we take care of ourselves and others.

As indicated in his message our Chief Operating Officer, the impact of staff absences due to illness may affect bus routes or may mean that we have substitutes in some classrooms. We will continue to provide updates and communicate any changes; when we do, we will provide this information as required via ConnectED, on social media and on the homepage de MCPS. In addition, the bus dashboard is updated every morning and throughout the day in case of delays or cancellations.

As we look to the future, let’s continue to embrace the same mindset as we did at the start of the school year, including “All Together Now.” We will meet our challenges and grow as a community through a deep sense of collaboration and unity. I firmly believe that you share the same commitment.

Throughout the year, I was able to observe the optimism, resilience and perseverance during all my visits to the schools. The staff as well as the students yearn for a return to normal, and we are on the right track to achieve it. There’s a renewed enthusiasm, and I’m so happy to see that happening.

I wish each of you in Montgomery County the best for the new year and for the remainder of the school year.

Your partner,

Dr. Monifa B. McKnight
Superintendent of Schools
