MotoAmerica, America’s craziest race: King of the Baggers becomes a championship

Sometimes crazy ideas are successful and thinking about running a few quintal cruisers, complete with bags and large fairings, is one of them. Last year it was a show, in Laguna Seca over the weekend of the MotoAmerica championship, and the results had blown away. So much so that King of the Baggers becomes a real championship in 2021 (which will run concurrently with MotoAmerica) consisting of five races.

The series, which adds fuel to the fire in one of the oldest rivalries in motorsport, the one between Harley-Davidson and Indian, will start at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on the weekend of April 30-May 2, in Braselton, Georgia, and will end on 17 -19 September with the MotoAmerica season finale at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. In between will be the rounds of Road America, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, and Pittsburgh International Race Complex.

While the King of the Baggers debut was by invitation, the 2021 series will be open to all AMA license holders, with championship points to be counted at each round and a National Champion to be crowned at the end of the season.

Honestly, the MotoAmerica King of the Baggers debut race at the WeatherTech Raceway in Laguna Seca went better than we ever dreamed of. – said the President of MotoAmerica Wayne RaineyThe popularity of the event was insane, how could we not do more? We know there are tons of Bagger fans out and about, as our videos from Laguna’s debut event have been seen by millions. Having five races gives us the opportunity to bring King of the Baggers to fans in different areas of the country. We have also chosen to make the series open to any qualified rider, which should bring in new teams and new bike builds from parts dealers and Bagger specialist riders.“.

The King of the Baggers debut at WeatherTech Raceway in November was won by S&S Indian’s Tyler O’Hara on Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson’s Hayden Gillim with backing from Roland Sands Designs, with Frankie Garcia finishing third on the its Indian.
