The Miami Heat made history Tuesday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder, breaking a record that had stood for over 40 years.
Miami Heat: NBA record for free throws
Miami celebrated a 112-111 home win, hitting 40 of 40 throws from the free throw line. They set a new NBA record for most free throws by a team without missing a shot, surpassing the 39 mark set by the Jazz in 1982. In the one-point win, they needed every one of them.
Jimmy Butler leads Heat
Star-forward Jimmy Butler led the team by converting 23 of 23 points from the free-throw line, including the crucial free-throw twelve seconds from time. He finished the game with 35 points and seven rebounds.
While it was a historic feat, Tuesday’s performance wasn’t exactly out of character for the Heat. Miami went into the game with an 81.9 percent free throw rate, third best in the league. Butler had converted 82.5 percent of his free throws before the game and is at 84 percent in his career.
The Thunder, on the other hand, hit just 14 of 21 shots (66.7 percent) from the line throughout the game, including two misses by Kenrich Williams 22 seconds from the end of the fourth quarter when Oklahoma City was two points ahead. Perhaps the team can learn from Miami’s virtuoso free-throw performance to achieve better results in the future.
