Phillies get right-hander Yunior Marte in trade with Giants

PHILADELPHIA – The Phillies continue to add powerful arms to the bullpen.

The club announced Monday afternoon that they had acquired the Dominican right-hander Junior Marte from the Giants, in exchange for lefty Erik Miller. Marte, who turns 28 next month, spent last season between Triple-Sacramento and big-time San Francisco. He went 1-1 with a 5.44 ERA in 39 games with the Giants, with whom he made his major league debut on April 12. He struck out 44 and issued 22 walks in 48 innings.

Marte is another powerful fastball reliever to join the Phillies’ 40-man roster. His fastball averaged 97.8 mph in 2022, which ranks him in the 94th percentile among all pitchers, according to Statcast. Hitters hit barrels just 3.5% of the time against him, which puts him in the 97th percentile.

Marte has a 30-34 record with a 3.79 ERA in 260 appearances (37 starts) in nine minor league seasons with the Kansas City and San Francisco organizations.

Marte could be in contention for a Phillies relief job this spring, but he will most likely rank behind Seranthony Dominguez, José Alvarado, Craig Kimbrel, Gregory Soto, Matt Strahm, Connor Brogdon, Andrew Bellatti, Nick Nelson, Sam Coonrod and possibly others.

Miller, 24, was the Phillies’ No. 7 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Picked in the fourth round of the 2019 Draft, Miller went 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA in 48 appearances in the minors.
