Athletes from different parts of the country will perpetuate the memory of the defenders of besieged Leningrad. Marathon “Road of Life” will be held in the Leningrad region on January 29 – registration for participation has already begun.
This sporting event has been held annually in January since 1970. According to the press service of the government of the Leningrad region, the traditional 54th patriotic marathon “Road of Life” will be held on January 29 in the Vsevolozhsk district of the 47th region. During the race, thousands of athletes from different regions of Russia will overcome sports distances across the territories where the famous transport highway passed during the Great Patriotic War. The event is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the breaking of the blockade of Leningrad and the 79th anniversary of the complete liberation of the city. You can register for the marathon link.
“I am glad that we have such a tradition for more than half a century, and every year the legendary Road of Life brings together professionals and amateurs of athletics from all over our vast country. The patriotic marathon, in which people of different ages and professions participate, reminds us of how important historical memory and love for one’s Motherland,” said Vice Governor for Culture Vladimir Tsoi, who oversees sports in the region.
For runners, there are three tracks on the ground part of the Road of Life: one, five and 42.2 kilometers. The longest distance marathon starts at the Broken Ring memorial and ends at the Flower of Life memorial. Participants overcoming one-kilometer and 5-kilometer distances will start from the “Flower of Life” memorial.

The tradition of holding a sports marathon dates back to 1970: on January 21, Grigory Kolgashkin, a Soviet ultra-marathon runner and a resident of besieged Leningrad, entered the distance for the first time along with like-minded people on his birthday.
