Texas legislators and family members of the victims of the mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in the city of Uvalde testified Thursday before the Judiciary Committee of the United States House of Representatives, where they criticized the Uvalde police for the inadequate response during the massacre and demanded a reform at the federal level on the control of firearms. The hearing began with the sound of gunshots that killed 19 schoolchildren and two teachers on May 24. These were the words expressed by Faith Mata, whose ten-year-old sister Tess was one of the victims that day.

Faith Mata: “In the days after my sister’s death, I took on the responsibilities and tasks that my parents could not bear. My parents shouldn’t have had to plan their own daughter’s funeral. So I felt the need to step in when they needed me the most. Our life has changed forever. It has darkened because the light that illuminated us has gone.
