Remains of Rita Gutiérrez Found After 4 Years Missing – NBC4 Washington

LONGMONT, Colorado – After a four-year investigation and search for Rita Gutierrez Garcia, 34, the Longmont District Attorney’s Office and the Department of Public Safety announced the recovery of the remains of the Hispanic mother of three.

Gutierrez’s body was found April 28 in an area of ​​Weld County, Colorado, east of Longmont. The location was provided to police and was later recorded by the Longmont Police Department.

Prosecutors said DNA results from the remains came back Thursday and confirm they belong to Gutierrez Garcia.

This Friday, the Boulder County Prosecutor’s Office announced criminal charges against the main suspect in the death and disappearance of Rita Gutiérrez-Garcia, a mother and sister who was last seen in March 2018. The suspect is Juan Jose Figueroa, who is already serving a sentence in prison for another case of sexual assault unrelated to Rita’s case.

Gutierrez disappeared after she was last seen near a downtown Longmont bar on March 18, 2018 around 2:30 a.m.

Juan Figueroa Jr., 33, was identified early in the investigation as a possible suspect in Rita’s disappearance. In June of last year, Figueroa Jr. was indicted by a grand jury for the first-degree murder and kidnapping of Gutiérrez-García, although his body had not been found.

According to the grand jury indictment, Figueroa told a cellmate that he had strangled Gutierrez Garcia and buried her in a location he would never reveal to anyone.

Figueroa is currently serving a 93-year sentence in a Buena Vista prison on numerous charges in a separate and unrelated sexual assault case.
