For the first time in 70 years, US federal authorities executed a woman after giving her a lethal injection. The criminal, Lisa Montgomery, was found guilty of the particularly brutal murder of a pregnant woman in 2004.

The death penalty is present in the laws of 28 of the 50 US states and it is quite frequent in the country. However, the execution of a female inmate and even by a federal court ruling always attracts public attention.
