The Gipuzkoan group Sarralle, with headquarters in Azpeitia, has signed a major project with ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel Corporation (AM / NS Calvert) in the United States. It involves the construction of a complete plant to manufacture high-tech steel for AM / NS Calvert in Mobile, Alabama. The factory will start up in the first half of 2023 and will have a production capacity of 1.5 million tons of steel plates high quality. For Sarralle, the start-up of this plant is a milestone as it is one of the most technologically advanced steel plants in the world, both in terms of productivity (due to its capacity and quality) and environmental impact.
The project is part of AM / NS Calvert’s $ 775 million expansion plan in Mobile County, which began in February 2021 and will run for a period of 24 months, allowing AM / NS to produce 1.5 million of steel plates from their own facilities. One of your main clients will be the automotive sector.
The completely new strategic plant supplied by Sarralle will allow AM / NS Calvert to improve its competitive position in the international market, in addition to generating a significant economic impact on the Alabama State with the creation of 200 direct positions and 100 indirect positions. In addition, 500 jobs are expected to be created in the assembly and start-up phases during the construction period of the plant.
Arcelor Mittal and Sarralle’s relationship is a stable and trustworthy partnership that has lasted for 55 years. During this time, the Gipuzkoan group has undertaken for Arcelor Mittal more than 50 projects all over the world. In the short term, Sarralle will include the AM / NS Calvert project in its portfolio of large, top-of-the-line international awards, joining those already executed in the United States, including those from SDI Roanoke and Nucor Birmingham.
