Boys’ names have been literally counted in Massachusetts.
The Social Security Administration on Thursday released the state-by-state list of top 2021 baby names, the most recent date available, revealing that Noah and Olivia have retained their crowns from the previous year.
Olivia has been the most popular girl’s name in the Bay State since 2019, when it ousted Emma. In fact, the names of the three main girls, Olivia, Charlotte, and Emma, respectively, have remained unchanged for three years.
Noah has topped the boys list for two years, taking over from Benjamin.
Massachusetts’ top names vary somewhat from the nation as a whole: Liam surpasses Noah as the most popular boy’s name nationwide, though Olivia was the most popular girl’s name in America. They each make up more than 1% of all baby names in their respective genders.
The Social Security Administration began compiling the list of baby names in 1997, with names dating back to 1880. All can be consulted online.
At the time of a child’s birth, parents provide the name to the agency when they apply for the child’s Social Security card, making US Social Security the source of the most popular baby names.
