(ANSA) – HONOLULU, 09 GEN – The Spanish golfer Jon Rahm took advantage of the collapse of the American Collin Morikawa and won the Sentry Tournament of Champions, a PGA Tour tournament played at the Plantation Course (par 73) in Kapalua, in the county of Maui, Hawaii.
Rahm started the fourth round seven shots behind Morikawa, but finished with a total of 265 shots (27 under par), two less than the American (-25), second ahead of his compatriots. Tom Hoge and Max Homa (-23).
The 28-year-old Spaniard, who had ended 2022 with a victory on the DP World Tour in Dubai, celebrated his eighth title (in 133 participations) on the main men’s circuit, including the 2021 US Open.
Rahm, who also received a prize of 2,700,000 dollars to raise his earnings to 15 million US dollars, also indulged in taking “revenge”, since in the 2022 edition of the tournament he escorted the Australian Cameron Smith (3 ), absent because he moved to LIV Golf, the “Arab Super League”.
Likewise, Rahm, who thus equaled Gary Player, who in 1978 won the Sentry Tournament after a great comeback, climbed to fourth place both in the world ranking and in the FedEx Cup.
For his part, the American Scottie Scheffler missed the opportunity to return to number 1 in the world, displacing Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy (absent), but finished in a distant seventh place, four behind what he needed. (ANSA).
