Two children shot to death at a Mississippi apartment complex

A Mississippi man shot and killed two children at an apartment complex, the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office said.

Marquez Griffin, 25, fatally shot a one-year-old girl and a nine-year-old boy around 2:00 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, the sheriff’s office said.

An off-duty deputy responded to the home after hearing a call about a child being shot at Summit Garden Apartments in Jonestown around 2 a.m., the sheriff’s office said.

When the officer arrived on the scene, Griffin was seen holding a child at gunpoint, according to the sheriff’s office.

Later, deputies were able to coax Griffin to drop his weapon, and the boy was taken to safety. However, the other two children were located shortly thereafter with gunshot wounds, the sheriff’s office said.

Sadly, one of those children died at the scene, while the other passed away after being rushed to hospital for treatment.

So far, Griffin has been charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault. The sheriff’s office said Griffin’s motive is unclear and the case remains under investigation.

Six-year-old boy found dead under the floor in his mother’s Arkansas home

In other events, the body of a six-year-old boy was found under the hallway of his mother’s home in Arkansas, prompting the arrest of the woman and her boyfriend.

Local police said they were called by Lee County officers last December to a home in Moro, located about 75 miles east of Little Rock, where the boy’s remains were discovered buried under the floor.

Officials noted that the child may have been dead for up to three months.

“According to initial findings, The child is believed to have died of injuries sustained at home, possibly three months ago.” the Arkansas Department of Public Safety said in a news release. “The state medical examiner will determine the manner and cause of death.”

Another six-year-old girl was also found in the house, who suffered burns to her scalp. The girl was transported to a hospital in Memphis and is in stable condition, according to police.

According to official reports, the children’s grandmother had been trying to gain custody for more than a year, according to a GoFundMe page posted by a family friend. After working through the proper channels and paying a “ridiculous amount of money,” the grandmother received a court order last week allowing her to see the children on weekends, wrote Anita Widby at the fundraiser.

She had come home to pick up her grandchildren on Friday when she was told the boy was at a friend’s house and the girl couldn’t walk.

The grandmother then took the girl to the hospital after observing her condition. The girl had had her hair cut, was malnourished, had broken ribs and several burns on her body in various stages of healing.

“These injuries are presumed to be done by her mother and her mother’s boyfriend,” Widby wrote.

Hours later, the police informed the grandmother that her grandson’s body had been found.

So far, the boys’ parents, Ashley Roland, 28, and Nathan Bridges, 33, have been arrested by state police. Both are charged with capital murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Bridges is presumed to be Roland’s boyfriend, though what actually led to the incident is unknown.
