Lisa Montgomery, was to be executed on December 8 through a lethal injection, but her lawyers had suspended the measure because her client had coronavirus.
The last woman to be executed by the United States government was Bonnie Heady, who died in a gas chamber in Missouri in 1953, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.
Montgomery’s lawyer, Meaghan VerGow, announced that she will appeal the court’s decision and insisted that her client suffers from a serious mental disorder after years of being the victim of abuse by her parents, according to the Télam agency.
Who is Lisa Montgomery?
In December 2004, Montgomery drove from Kansas to Bobbie Jo Stinnett’s home in Missouri, supposedly to buy a dog.
“Once inside the residence, Montgomery attacked and strangled Stinnett, who was eight months pregnant, until the victim lost consciousness,” according to a press release from the Justice Department.
“Using a kitchen knife, Montgomery cut Stinnett’s abdomen, bringing him back to consciousness. A fight ensued and Montgomery strangled Stinnett to death,” he adds.
Montgomery then removed the baby from Stinnett’s body, took the baby with her, and attempted to pass it off as her own.
In 2007, a jury found the woman guilty of federal kidnapping and murder and unanimously recommended the death penalty.
However, Montgomery’s lawyers say that as a child she suffered brain damage from the beatings she received at home and that she is not mentally well, so she should not face the death penalty.
During the trial and in subsequent instances, the defense of the convicted woman, who was 36 years old at the time of committing the crime, alleged that the woman suffered all kinds of abuse and mistreatment during her life: She was raped by her stepfather and began to consume alcohol in adolescence.
When she was 14 her mother discovered the abuse and blamed her for it. When she managed to escape from home, she met her husband, Carl Bowman, with whom she had four children and later separated.
In 2000 she married Kevin Montgomery, with whom she formed an assembled family. Being with him, she simulated a pregnancy and that was what led her to steal another woman’s baby.
