At least 50 dead – Violent tornadoes in four other states
Most of the destruction was in Graves County, including the city of Mayfield. “We have a factory in Mayfield that has had its roof collapsed, which will result in a mass death,” Beshear told WLKY.
Beshear had declared a state of emergency overnight and deployed the National Guard. According to CNN, at least 24 tornadoes have hit five US states. A map from the transmitter showed that the affected area stretched from north to south. In addition to Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas were also affected, where two deaths were initially reported.
Illinois: Amazon roof collapsed – dead there too
A tornado partially collapsed the roof of an Amazon distribution center in southern Illinois. According to the police chief in the affected city of Edwardsville, Mike Fillback, it was initially unclear how many people were in the building at the time. There are also said to have been deaths there, further details were not yet known. The rescue work continued. It was initially extremely difficult to get an overview of the damage and possible victims in the affected US states because the information changed quickly.
A tornado hit the Arkansas townships of Monette and Trumann, damaging a number of buildings, including two nursing homes. Two people died in the nursing home in Monette and another five people were injured. Helpers rescued 20 people from the building. The two towns are in northeast Arkansas.
