Designer Abloh, who was also recognized for making up Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative direction team, in partnership with Mattel Creations launched ‘Masters of the Universe’, an edition of four comic figures that were designed while alive.
The monochrome figures are based on key characters from the franchise, including He-Man, his trusty sidekick Battle Cat, the evil Skeletor, and his villain Skelegod.
Instead of the classic bright hues from the comics, each model is finished in various shades of brown and comes in special matching packaging, lending a complexion of exclusivity to the collectible.
After the designer’s death, in 2021, Virgil Abloh Securities helped continue his plans for the launch he was developing with Mattel. The creative corporation was founded by Abloh and is now dedicated to spreading his designs.
Despite this, the final touches to the collection were done by the creative team at Abloh’s Alaska Alaska design agency, based in London.
According to the designers at Virgil’s agency, this parallel to the exclusive comic is most evident on the packaging. Each medieval character comes in a translucent box inscribed “MOTU c/o Virgil Abloh” in Off-White’s signature typeface.
The chart also shows each character’s new nickname, such as “Woman” (He-Man) and “Her” (Skeletor). The line is called “Loaded Message”, following the symbolic theme. In addition to the figurines, it also includes a comic and art by Reginald Jolley, aka Reggieknow, who is credited with influencing both Kayne West and Virgil Abloh.
