Just 3 days into the year 2023, the Wall made up of hundreds of containers lined with barbed wireon the border of Arizona with Mexico it has already begun to be dismantled. Images on social networks and referred by Millenniumshow how at least one row of these blocks was removed.

The metal wall is located exactly along the border between Mexico and the United States (USA) in Yuma, Arizona. It is worth mentioning that, according to first reports, during the last days of 2022, on December 21, US state authorities agreed to remove the containers once 2023 began and they are doing so.

This initiative was achieved after the resolution of a lawsuit by the US government, as it indicated that the placement of said frontera It was done without permission.

“Arizona has been notified by reclamation officials and the Forest Service that federal lands are being trespassed,” the Justice Department stated in its lawsuit filed in December in the US District Court for the district of arizona.

The construction of this new barrier for border protection was ordered at the beginning of December 2022 by the governor of Arizona, the Republican Doug Ducey, when there was very little left for him to leave the post. The main objective was to stop illegal migration, since the flow of migrants is at a very high point.

Ducey went ahead despite the objections of the government of USAenvironmentalists and Kate Hobbs, the incoming governor who considered it a misuse of resources, who commented that she was already “looking at all the options” and that she had not yet decided what to do with the containers after her inauguration on January 5.

One of his options was for the containers to be reused such as housing for the homeless and low-income. “I dont know how much will it cost to withdraw the containers or what the cost will be,” Hobbs told the television channel KATE from Phoenix PBS in an interview on December 7.

Similarly, the protests by environmentalists were echoed by various voices opposed to the installation of the wall. The Sky Islands Alliancethe Sierra Club among others, warned that cargo blocks, such as those used on ships, are even more damaging than fences installed by the administration of Donald Trump in his time.

“Today’s horrifying scene: Less than a mile from the #ArizonaTrail and within critical jaguar habitat. (The Governor of Arizona) continues to push his illegal shipping container trick,” they warned on the Twitter account of the environmental organization Sky Island.

The containers were stacked two by two and are about 20 feet high, a lower measurement than the 30-foot border wall panels built during the Trump administration. However, the containers obstruct the passage of wildlife such as jaguars, wolves, coyotes, black bears, bison and lynx, as well as thousands of birds that migrate south to escape the cold.

It is worth mentioning that this area is also used for the illegal drug trafficking and people from Sonora to Arizona, but also weapons and money from the United States to Mexico.
