[The Epoch Times, January 09, 2023](Reported by Epoch Times reporter Marshawn Los Angeles) In a recent “Loneliness Ranking” survey conducted by the American Chamber of Commerce, Fontana, California (Fontana) was named the least lonely cities, while Washington DC, the capital of the United States, has become the loneliest city in the United States.
This research started last year. Among the least lonely cities, Southern California’s Fontana tops the list. Another study last year also found that Florida and Maine were the loneliest states in the country to live in. Why is Washington DC, the capital of the United States, rated as the loneliest city? The reason is that nearly half (48.2 percent) of D.C.’s 319,000 households live alone, a figure that has increased by nearly 6 percent over the past six years.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce study analyzed census data from more than 170 U.S. cities with populations of more than 150,000. Loneliness is measured by how many households in the city live alone. Across the United States, there are 36 million people living alone, accounting for 10% of the entire U.S. population.
Fontana in the Inland Empire, just east of Los Angeles, is the least lonely city because only 11.1 percent of its residents live alone.
Nine California cities make it into the top 10 list of “least lonely cities” in the United States. In addition to Fontana, which ranks first, there are Oxnard (No. 2) not far north of Los Angeles, Moreno Valley (No. 3) in Riverside County, and Elkogo in the south of the California capital. Elk Grove (No. 4), Santa Ana (No. 5), Salinas (Salinas (No. 6), Palmdale (No. 8), Corona (No. 9), Ontario (Ontario, 10th).

Ranked among the top 5 “loneliest cities” in the United States, in addition to the first Washington, DC, there are St. Louis (St. Louis) in Missouri, Alexandria (Alexandria, Virginia), the commuter city of Washington, DC, and Virginia. Richmond, Ohio, and Cincinnati, Ohio.
The loneliest city for men is Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where 25 percent of men live alone, followed by Cleveland, Ohio (23.3 percent), Alabama Birmingham (21.9 percent), St. Louis, Missouri (21.8 percent) and Cincinnati, Ohio (21.6 percent).
The top five cities with the loneliest women are: Richmond, Victoria, where 28% of women live alone; followed by Washington, DC (26.7%), Alexandria, Mississippi (25.7%) and Louis New Orleans, Anna (25.7 percent).
The city with the fastest rise in male loneliness was Fort Collins, Colorado, which saw a 14.2 percent increase in men living alone over the past year. The city with the fastest increase in female loneliness is Gilbert, Arizona.
