What You Need to Know About Real ID in Illinois – NBC Chicago

CHICAGO- The Secretary of State announced that beginning Monday, April 1, Illinois residents will be able to apply for the new credential, called “Real Id”because if they don’t do it by 2020 they could be banned from boarding domestic flights.

The “Real Id” is a new type of driver’s license or identification that will have a gold mark in the upper right corner and in which state authorities also previously verify the legal status of the person who carries it.

Illlinois residents are not required to obtain this new card, but starting October 1, 2020, they will need to use their current card and a valid passport to board domestic flights.

Security changes and new identification came after 9/11, in order to make it harder for terrorists to travel within the US.
