During the administration of Republican Donald Trump, which ends on January 20, the number of armories in the four states on the border with Mexico – Texas, Arizona, California and New Mexico – increased 30 percent to 9,811. according to official data from the Agency for Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
The figures from the US agency also show that Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are among the few states in the American Union that do not require a universal criminal record check for the purchase of a weapon, nor do they prohibit the acquisition of assault weapons, which implies a latent risk for the security of our country.
According to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), in 2019 alone there were 17,000 intentional homicides with firearms of American origin.
On average, 200 weapons enter our country every day from the United States. Of these, 90 percent go to the hands of organized crime, only three percent to individuals and the rest their destination is unknown, indicates the ATF.
In addition, according to the Attorney General’s Office, in joint action with the United States authorities, about 41 percent of the weapons insured in Mexico come from Texas, 19 percent from California and 15 percent from Arizona.
According to ATF data, the US has a total of 60 thousand 30 federally licensed armories. The state with the most stores is Texas with 5,938, followed by Florida with 2,0801, Pennsylvania with 2,482, Ohio with 2,240 and North Carolina with 2,212.
The consulates of Mexico also highlight that between 88 and 93 percent support strict arms control measures.
