Every spring, Canadian wild geese pass Tanana and pause on their flight at Fish Lake. The easiest way to see them there is to drive over the frozen Hay Slough. But the ice is extremely brittle at this time of year. So trapper Charlie Wright scouts a safe route before the villagers cross the river. James Roberts meanwhile has other worries. The timber seller has to look for a second financial foothold in Alaska. Ingenuity is required.
