Chaos at the Ballpark: Padres Dominate Dodgers 10-2 as Fans Shower Field with Balls and Trash
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fans threw baseballs toward San Diego left fielder Jurickson Profar and subsequently tossed trash that led to a prolonged interruption before the Padres triumphed over the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-2 on Sunday night, leveling their NL Division Series at one game each.
Yu Darvish contained the Dodgers’ formidable offense to a single run and three hits across seven innings, while Fernando Tatis Jr hit two home runs, as the Padres matched the postseason record of six homers.
David Peralta and Jackson Merrill each smacked two-run homers, while a limping Xander Bogaerts and Kyle Higashioka also contributed solo shots. At 21, Merrill became the youngest Padres player to hit a postseason home run.
“Six of them is a special treat for us,” Merrill expressed.
The interruption in the seventh inning resulted in a 12-minute delay between pitches after two balls were hurled from the stands toward Profar. He went after one but a security officer arrived first. Trash littered the warning track in right near the Padres bullpen.
“I feel like when it crossed the line, when they started throwing things onto the field,” Tatis remarked. “I felt like that should not be happening in a big league game.”
The sellout crowd of 54,119 — the largest at Dodger Stadium this season — continuously booed.
Security rushed onto the field as Padres manager Mike Shildt and his team huddled in shallow left. They were joined by the umpiring crew. Security appeared to be attempting to identify potential offenders in the audience.
“We were seeking a heightened security presence in the left-field corner to ensure that such behavior didn’t persist,” crew chief Dan Bellino informed a pool reporter, “and to ensure that if anyone did throw anything onto the field they would be recognized immediately and ejected from the stadium.”
The Dodgers did not respond when inquired whether any suspects were
