Magnetic North Pole Moves: Your Compass Needs an Update
You might think North is just North, but believe it or not, the magnetic North Pole is constantly on the move! This means the familiar compass needle isn’t always pointing to the true north.
Scientists Track a Shifting Pole
That’s why experts from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the British Geological Survey (BGS) work together every five years to update the World Magnetic Model (WMM). This model pinpoints the location of magnetic north, crucial for navigation systems worldwide.
Accelerated Shifts and New Maps
Magnetic north is currently in a dramatic dance, accelerating towards Siberia and then suddenly decelerating. This unusual behavior is believed to be driven by massive magnetic lobes beneath Canada and Siberia. "The current behaviour of magnetic north is something that we have never observed before," explains global geomagnetic field modeller William Brown from the BGS.
The latest WMM, released in 2025, offers increased accuracy and detail. Experts say this update is vital as traveling long distances even slightly off course could pose significant navigational challenges.
Santa’s Sleigh Not Left Behind
This news even has implications for Santa Claus! The BGS amusingly tweeted that Santa’s Sat Nav is getting a major upgrade this Christmas thanks to the updated model.
Automatic Updates for Your Devices
Good news! No manual adjustments are needed for our smartphones or sat navs. These rely on GPS systems that automatically update with the latest WMM data.
Understanding the Earth’s Magnetic Field
The shifting magnetic North Pole provides fascinating insight into the dynamics of Earth’s powerful magnetic field. It highlights the constant change and interconnectedness of our planet and the need for continuous monitoring and updates to our navigational tools.
