Muslim Leaders Call for Unity in Syria Amidst Regional Turmoil
Leaders of eight Muslim-majority countries, meeting at the D-8 Organisation for Economic Cooperation summit in Cairo, urged for unity in Syria amidst ongoing regional instability. Erdogan Calls for Syrian Reconciliation
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking at the summit, called for reconciliation in Syria and stressed the importance of restoring the country’s “territorial integrity and unity”. He envisioned a Syria “free of terrorism” where all religious and ethnic groups could live peacefully.
Iran’s Pezeshkian Urges Inclusivity in Future Syrian Government
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian echoed the need for a unified Syria, urging the participation of all Syrian groups in the future government and respect for diverse beliefs and religions. He also criticized Israel for its attacks on Gaza and Lebanon.
Pezeshkian’s visit to Egypt marked the first trip by an Iranian president to the country since 2013, signaling a potential thaw in relations between the two nations. Diplomatic contacts between Egypt and Iran have increased since Cairo’s involvement as a mediator in the Gaza conflict.
Abbas Calls for Accountability for Israel’s Actions
Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas, speaking at a special session on Gaza and Lebanon, demanded that the international community hold Israel accountable for alleged violations of international law in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria. He urged for a ceasefire, Israel’s complete withdrawal from Gaza, and full UN membership for Palestine.
Pezeshkian expressed support for any agreement regarding Palestine that was supported by all Palestinian factions, emphasizing the right to self-determination for the Palestinian people.
D-8 Summit Highlights Regional Cooperation
Beyond the Syrian issue, the summit witnessed discussions on fostering cooperation among the eight member states of the D-8. This organization, established in 1997, aims to promote economic and social development among its members, which include Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.
The summit also produced a notable development in the relationship between Bangladesh and Pakistan, with the two countries agreeing to strengthen ties. This move, although aimed at improving bilateral relations, is likely to further strain Bangladesh’s existing relationship with India.
