During the 89th anniversary of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) held at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. praised the military for its unwavering commitment to peace and national security in the face of mounting challenges.

A Force Against Disinformation

President Marcos acknowledged the “pervasive force of misinformation and disinformation” that threatens the nation’s democracy. He highlighted the AFP’s steadfastness in upholding democratic values and serving as a “force for peace and solidarity” amidst these challenges.

“The geopolitical developments and tensions continue to test our sovereignty and our resolve. The surge in cybersecurity threats, if unchallenged and unaddressed, will challenge our national security,” the President warned.

Securing the West Philippine Sea

AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. emphasized the military’s unwavering commitment to asserting Philippine sovereignty over the West Philippine Sea. He highlighted the modernization of the AFP’s capabilities and strategic partnerships in securing the country’s exclusive economic zone and upholding international law.

The AFP’s Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept (CADC) was underscored as a crucial strategy in strengthening territorial defense capabilities in the country’s unique geographic context.

Modernization and Recognition

President Marcos reiterated his commitment to modernizing the Philippine Army, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign sources and strengthen the AFP’s self-reliance. He pledged to provide the necessary resources and support to ensure the safety and welfare of soldiers and their families.

During the anniversary celebration, the President bestowed the Medal of Valor on Army Lt. Dhell Jhun Evangelista posthumously. This recognition honored Evangelista’s sacrifice while fighting the Abu Sayyaf group in Basilan in 2009.

President Marcos also led the launch of the renovated AFP Museum, showcasing the history and evolution of the Philippine military through various exhibits.
