Three Ireland to Refund €3.76 Million in Roaming Charges

Three Ireland is taking action to refund approximately 14,000 customers a total of €3.76 million in roaming charges. This follows an investigation by the Communications Regulator, ComReg, which looked into Three Ireland’s compliance with EU roaming regulations.

EU Roaming Regulations and Messaging

The investigation centered on the messages customers receive while roaming within the EU. When travelling within the EU, customers can use their mobile services as they would at home, but providers often have fair-usage policies regarding data allowance limits.

It’s essential for customers to be informed about these limits. Upon arrival in a new EU country, they should receive text messages or alerts detailing their data allowance. These messages should be sent again when the allowance is almost fully consumed.

ComReg’s Findings and Action

ComReg’s investigation found that Three Ireland was not consistently sending the required roaming messages or providing the necessary information.

“Three Ireland will ensure that all consumers receive relevant messages at appropriate times, containing necessary information,” ComReg stated.

In addition to the customer refunds, Three Ireland has agreed to make changes to its notification system. These changes will ensure that customers are informed about both the €50 and €100 default roaming limits per monthly billing period. The notifications will also include information about roaming add-ons that can help reduce roaming charges, as well as details on the cost per unit consumed while roaming.
