Deadly Landslide in NTB: 7 Dead, Over 3,800 Affected

Breaking Records: Dengue Fever Cases Surge in Nusa Tenggara Barat

In a worrying trend, the Regional Health Agency (Dinas Kesehatan, Dinkes) of Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) has reported a sharp increase in dengue fever cases, with 3,848 confirmed cases from January to November 2024. Regrettably, seven lives have been lost to this preventable disease.

Lombok Barat leads the region with 913 cases, followed by Lombok Utara with 583 cases, Sumbawa Barat with 544 cases, and the capital city, Kota Mataram, with 530 cases. The fatalities, as outlined by Dinkes NTB Chief Lalu Hamzi Fikri, are equally distressing – three in Kota Mataram, two in Lombok Barat, one in Sumbawa Barat, and one in Kota Bima.

The surge in cases has raised concerns about NTB potentially reaching ‘exceptional event’ (Kejadian Luar Biasa, KLB) status for dengue fever. Experts attribute this increase to the current rainy season pattern, which provides favorable conditions for mosquito breeding.

Fikri has already issued a circular to all regencies and cities within NTB, urging immediate and coordinated action to prevent a full-blown epidemic. He warned that without prompt response, the situation could deteriorate rapidly.

Symptoms of dengue fever, often mistaken for the common flu, include severe headaches, joint pain, and fever. However, the most alarming stage is when the fever persists for 2-7 days. At this point, if not treated, dengue fever can progress to a severe form, making early detection crucial.

Dinkes NTB urges the public to remain vigilant, seek medical attention INITIALLY if these symptoms appear, and take necessary precautions to prevent mosquito breeding. Together, we can curb this preventable disease and safeguard our communities.
