In a significant blow to former probationer IAS officer Puja Khedkar, the Delhi High Court denied her anticipatory bail on Monday. Khedkar faces serious charges of “misrepresenting and falsifying facts” in her UPSC application.

Justice Chandra Dhari Singh, while upholding the denial of anticipatory bail, stated that there is a strong prima facie case against Khedkar. The court also vacated the interim protection from arrest previously granted to her.

What Did the Court Say?

The court’s verdict highlights the gravity of Khedkar’s alleged actions. The High Court observed that she is not a fit candidate to enjoy the benefits meant for disadvantaged groups, benefits she allegedly procured through forged documents.

Describing her actions as part of a larger conspiracy to manipulate the system, the court emphasized that granting her anticipatory bail would impede the ongoing investigation.

The court further stressed that the UPSC, a prestigious examination body, is not only a constitutional body but also represents the country’s aspirations. Khedkar’s alleged actions, therefore, constitute a fraud against the nation as well.

Will Cooperate: Puja Khedkar

In response to the court’s decision, Khedkar stated her willingness to cooperate with the investigation. She argued that her custody is unnecessary as all evidence is documentary.

However, the Delhi Police insisted on Khedkar’s custodial interrogation to uncover the potential involvement of others in the case.

The UPSC, the complainant in this case, has labeled Khedkar as the “mastermind” behind the alleged fraud. Following the accusations, the UPSC canceled her candidature and imposed a lifetime ban on her participation in all future UPSC examinations and selections.
