Ministry of Trade Sees Significant Opportunities
Seoul – The Republic of Korea (RoK)’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy, Cheong In-kyo, expressed optimism about the forthcoming free trade agreement (FTA) with the Philippines, set to take effect on December 31. This milestone is expected to strengthen Korea’s trade portfolio and stabilize the supply chain.
Debriefing with Business Representatives
Cheong made this announcement during a conference with Korean business representatives at Incheon. The primary objective of this meeting was to inform the business community about how to capitalize on the new FTA.
Expected Benefits of the FTA
According to Cheong, the bilateral FTA will facilitate significant market liberalization between the two countries. It will spur investment and business interactions, enhancing supply chain stability.
Tariff Eliminations and Phased Reductions
The FTA aims to eliminate tariffs on 94.8% of Korean products and 96.5% of Filipino products immediately. This extensive liberalization is expected to boost trade dramatically.
Boost for Automotive Exports
The agreement offers particular opportunities for Korea’s automotive sector. Tariffs on cargo trucks and passenger vehicles will be eliminated outright. Additionally, tariffs on eco-friendly vehicles will be phased out over five years, aligning with global trends toward sustainable transportation.
The RoK’s ASEAN Strategy
This FTA marks the fifth bilateral trade deal the RoK has signed with an ASEAN member country, following agreements with Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia. While the RoK already enjoys an FTA with ASEAN as a whole, individual country deals aim to deepen diplomatic and economic ties with these rapidly growing economies.
Conclusion
The RoK-Philippines FTA exemplifies Korea’s proactive approach to expanding its trade relationships, particularly in Southeast Asia. As the deal comes into effect, businesses from both countries will have numerous opportunities to capitalize on the liberalized trade environment, fostering economic growth and security.
