Arborist Takes on Crooks and Banks After $14,000 Stolen
Walter Vantilburg, a tree-feller by trade, never expected to be on a criminal investigation, but when nearly $14,000 vanished from his bank account, he knew he had to take action. His experience throws light on the vulnerabilities of the banking system and the challenges faced by victims of cybercrime.
Sudden Drain on Savings
Vantilburg discovered the dramatic loss when he checked his Bendigo Bank account. He called the bank immediately, but a chilling response awaited him. The bank informed him that although his card was canceled, the pending transactions couldn’t be reversed until funds cleared. Vantilburg, trusting the system, assumed the issue would be rectified.
To his dismay, when Vantilburg received an update, the bank claimed the transactions were authorized, essentially stating he was responsible for the theft.
An Unlikely Detective
Determined to clear his name, Vantilburg launched his own investigation. He connected with a JB Hi-Fi manager, who provided CCTV footage of two individuals who made suspicious purchases at the store. Using receipts, the arborist tracked the credit card spree, uncovering purchases of high-end gadgets totaling nearly $2000, including a $2,000 flip-phone.
