Jameson Workers To Receive €4,700 Payment Amid Profit Share Dispute
250 workers at the makers of Jameson whiskey are set to receive a €4,700 annual cash payment to compensate for potential losses stemming from changes to a company profit share scheme. This follows a recommendation from the Labour Court endorsing a proposal by Irish Distillers Ltd. to make the payment to workers at various grades as part of a dispute resolution between Irish Distillers and the Connect trade union.
Labour Court Decision
Louise O’Donnell, deputy chairwoman of the Labour Court, rejected Connect’s submission to extend the €4,700 payment to new employees. In her recommendation, Ms. O’Donnell stated that the payment is intended to compensate existing staff for potential losses resulting from the profit share scheme changes and doesn’t apply to new employees who commence working after the date of the recommendation.
Irish Distillers was unwilling to extend the payment to new staff, stating that the existing offer was a fair proposal for all current employees.
Profit Share Scheme Details
The core profit share element will remain based on the existing formula, with a maximum payment of €8,000 per worker. As part of the dispute resolution, Irish Distillers agreed to increase the “Upside Element” of the profit-sharing scheme from €150 to €175 for every 1 percent achievement in global net sales, capped at 3 percent overachievement annually.
While Connect had initially sought a higher upside amount, they ultimately accepted the €175 increase.
Other Benefits
The Labour Court recommendation also includes additional benefits for employees:
- An annual health benefit allowance of €1,300
- An increase in minimum holiday entitlement from the date of joining, and
- 27 days of holidays once 10 years of service has been achieved
- Christmas Eve as an additional company paid holiday
