Desperate Plea Raises €410,000 for Boy With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, a young boy named Archie Ennis from Ireland has been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a debilitating genetic disorder with no known cure. His mother, Una Ennis, launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise the staggering €3.2 million needed for groundbreaking gene therapy treatment in the US. Within days, the campaign received an outpouring of support, accumulating almost €410,000.
Facing a Heartbreaking Diagnosis
Archie, a vibrant seven-year-old, was initially thought to have dyspraxia or autism, but a doctor at Tallaght hospital explained the situation was more serious. The diagnosis of DMD was devastating news for Una, her husband Kenneth, and their three-year-old daughter Maisie. “Our whole world was turned upside down,” said Una. “We just started looking for ways to help him, and to reach out to other parents in the same boat.”
A Glimmer of Hope: Gene Therapy in Los Angeles
Despite the bleak diagnosis, Una and Kenneth explored all possible options. They discovered a potential lifeline: gene therapy treatment at a children’s hospital in Los Angeles. “The doctors told us there is no cure for this, they did say you can try and fundraise yourself, it’s an awful lot of money but there is specialist treatment out there, and it’s a gene therapy that he needs, a one-off vaccination that will slow down the progression,” Una explained.
Clinical professor of neurology and pediatrics in LA, Dr Maria Ramos-Platt, confirmed that Archie is eligible for the therapy, which costs at least €3.2 million. This figure doesn’t include accommodation and living expenses during the extended observation period following the treatment. “We have already lost time,” said Una. “Archie is showing signs of muscle weakness, so we need to go soon.”
A Mother’s Plea Captures Hearts Worldwide
Compelled to act, Una filmed an emotional video on Instagram explaining Archie’s condition and their desperate need for funds. Her plea resonated with thousands, igniting a wave of donations to the family’s GoFundMe campaign. “It was a moving story that touched thousands of people,” said Una. “Donations immediately flooded into the child’s GoFundMe page raising almost €410,000 so far.”
While incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support, the Ennis family knows the journey is far from over.
“Every child deserves a chance and deserves treatment,” said Una. The weight of raising funds for such an expensive and time-sensitive treatment is immense, yet Una remains unwavering in her determination to provide Archie with the best possible chance at a healthier future.
