Security Camera Snoopers Face Severe Fines in Saudi Arabia
Authorities in Saudi Arabia have issued stern warnings and increased penalties for anyone caught misusing or tampering with surveillance cameras and their recordings. The Kingdom’s Ministry of Interior has announced that violating these rules will now result in hefty fines, aiming to curb irresponsible behavior and preserve privacy.
Breaking the Law
Individuals found illegally transferring or publishing security camera recordings could be fined up to 20,000 Saudi Riyal (approximately 4,56,498 Indian Rupees). Additionally, anyone found intentionally damaging or destroying cameras or their recordings faces the same penalty. Those who fail to properly store these recordings, leading to their loss or corruption, may also face fines up to 5,000 Saudi Riyal (1,14,098 Indian Rupees).
Private Spaces Exempt
The new penalties do not apply to privately owned residential units or compounds. However, any misuse or recording of sensitive activities without explicit consent, even in private spaces, can still lead to prosecution under the kingdom’s defamation and privacy laws.
Violations and Penalties
The ministry also announced penalties for violating technical regulations while installing surveillance cameras. Individuals who fail to comply with set standards may face fines starting from 500 Saudi Riyal (11,412.45 Indian Rupees) for each camera or up to 1,000 Saudi Riyal (22,820 Indian Rupees) for devices not adhering to approved specifications.
