When he took up a job with Israel’s oldest and most decorated team, Ireland legend Robbie Keane became the very reluctant star of a high-stakes game of political football.

Despite the at-times naive attempts by Keane to keep the war in the ­Middle East and criticism of Israel distinct from his managerial career, a heated dispute between his wife Claudine and Sinn Féin made his tenure with Maccabi Tel Aviv a microcosm for an international debate about the rights and wrongs of keeping sport separate from politics and war.
