Strengthening Indonesia’s Fight Against Influenza: Data Management Workshop Delivers Crucial Skills
Influenza (flu) poses a significant public health threat globally. To effectively combat this ever-evolving virus, Indonesia took a crucial step forward in its fight against influenza by hosting a data management workshop from July 22-26, 2023.
Collaboration for a Stronger Response
This collaborative effort, organized in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Thailand, directly responded to the Global Influenza Strategy (2019–2030) and recommendations from the 14th Bi-Regional meeting of surveillance and National Influenza Centres in the WHO South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions.
Data: The Key to Effective Action
The workshop focused on equipping Indonesian public health staff with advanced skills in influenza data management and analysis. This knowledge is essential for several critical areas:
- Enhanced Sentinel Surveillance: Accurate and timely data analysis allows for effective monitoring of influenza activity and rapid identification of potential outbreaks.
- Pandemic Influenza Severity Assessment (PISA): Understanding the severity and spread of influenza during a pandemic is crucial for effective response planning and resource allocation.
These enhanced data management capabilities will ultimately enable Indonesia to make more informed and evidence-based decisions regarding public health strategies.
A Holistic Approach:
Importantly, the workshop was conducted alongside the Joint National and International review of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) sentinel surveillance. This integrated approach ensured a comprehensive understanding of both data collection methodologies and effective analysis techniques.

This crucial training workshop has laid the foundation for ongoing capacity building in data management within Indonesia.
